The best readiness app is not the one with the boldest score or the most alarming warning. It is the one that clearly explains what it measures, shows its limitations, protects your data, and helps you make a better training decision.
Use this guide to compare apps for boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, and MMA without confusing training guidance with medical assessment.
Start with the decision you want help making
Before comparing features, write down the decision:
- Should today be a hard session, a technical session, or a recovery day?
- How much contact has accumulated recently?
- Is my reaction or attention changing relative to my own baseline?
- Can I show my coach a useful record of the week?
- Do I need medical advice rather than another app score?
An app should be evaluated against a real decision. A long feature list is not evidence that it helps with that decision.
Seven things to compare
1. What training data does it capture?
Look for enough detail to describe the session, not just a generic “workout completed” label. Useful fields may include training type, rounds, intensity, contact or head-impact context, and notes.
Ask whether the app can distinguish technical drills, pad work, conditioning, strength work, roadwork, and sparring. If every session becomes one undifferentiated number, the output may hide the context you need.
2. Does it show recent context?
A single session rarely explains the whole week. Check whether the app shows a rolling or recent history and whether you can see how the current session relates to prior work.

3. Does it use a personal baseline?

Personal baselines are still imperfect. Sleep, stress, pain, practice, device timing, and motivation can change a result. A slower score is a prompt to look at context, not a diagnosis.
4. Can you understand why the app made a suggestion?
Prefer recommendations that show their inputs and limitations. “Your score is 73, so you are safe to spar” is a red flag. A responsible training tool might say that recent load, contact, or recovery context suggests keeping the next session technical, while leaving medical decisions to qualified professionals.
5. Is the boundary between training and medicine explicit?
Avoid products that claim to diagnose concussion, detect CTE, measure “brain damage” from a phone, or clear you for contact. Those claims require clinical evidence and professional care; a consumer readiness app should not make them casually.
After a suspected concussion, the correct next step is medical assessment and removal from contact. No app should override that.
6. Is the privacy model understandable?
Read what happens to session logs, cognitive results, notes, and device identifiers. Ask:
- Is data stored locally, remotely, or both?
- Is selected data sent to an AI provider?
- Can the service sell or share the data?
- Can you delete your history?
- Does the app work when you are offline?
Privacy is a product feature, not a footnote—especially when an app handles health-adjacent training information.
7. Are the commercial facts clear?
A product comparison should show the current price, trial terms, in-app purchase terms, platform, and important limits. If the information is hidden behind a sales call or scattered across outdated pages, treat that as part of the comparison.
Do not trust a “best app” article that refuses to state who it is for, where it is weaker, or what it cannot do.
A simple comparison worksheet
For every app, answer these questions using its current product page and your own test:
- What athlete and sport is it designed for?
- What can I log in under one minute after training?
- How does it represent contact and recent volume?
- What does the readiness output actually mean?
- Does it use my own baseline?
- Can I inspect the history behind a recommendation?
- What does it explicitly refuse to claim?
- Where is my data stored and processed?
- What does it cost today?
- What happens when the app is wrong or uncertain?
The last question matters. Real training is noisy. An honest tool should make uncertainty visible rather than hiding it behind a precise-looking number.

Are cognitive tests useful for fighters?
They can add context when used consistently and interpreted alongside sleep, stress, symptoms, and training load. They cannot diagnose concussion or CTE.
Should a readiness app tell me not to train?
It can suggest a lower-risk training option based on the information you entered. It should not pretend to make a medical diagnosis. Symptoms after an impact require appropriate medical guidance.
Is a “brain load” score a clinical measurement?
