Technology and Concussion Recovery: What Helps and What Is Experimental

How to think about apps, wearables, telehealth, VR, biomarkers, and AI in concussion recovery without confusing monitoring with clearance.

Technology can make a recovery plan easier to follow. It can also make an unsupported claim look precise.

The useful distinction is between tools that support education, communication, and record-keeping—and tools claiming to measure recovery or make a clinical decision.

Apps can support the process

A symptom diary, activity log, appointment reminder, or education app can help an athlete remember what happened and communicate patterns. The value is practical: better information at the right time.

The review of mobile concussion apps found an uneven evidence base. An app’s presence in an app store is not proof that its medical claims are validated.

Wearables provide measurements, not universal thresholds

Wearables can show activity, heart rate, sleep estimates, or other trends. They may be useful for research and for conversations with a professional who understands the device and the athlete.

There is no universal wearable number that proves a brain has recovered or authorizes contact. Device accuracy, baseline, placement, algorithm, and context all matter.

VR and digital rehabilitation are developing areas

Virtual reality and other digital rehabilitation tools may help selected people with specific symptoms or goals under appropriate supervision. The review of VR in concussion rehabilitation describes a developing field rather than a universal treatment.

The question is not whether a tool looks modern. Ask what outcome was studied, in which population, with what supervision, and against what comparison.

Biomarkers, imaging, and AI remain bounded

The Amsterdam consensus describes advanced neuroimaging, fluid biomarkers, genetic testing, and emerging technologies as valuable research tools that are not yet suited to routine clinical use for every recovery decision.

That includes AI systems. An AI output can summarize information or support a workflow, but it does not become a clinical assessment simply because the interface is confident.

What to ask before trusting a technology

  1. What exactly does it measure?
  2. What population was studied?
  3. Was the outcome education, symptom tracking, diagnosis, prognosis, or clearance?
  4. Does it show uncertainty and limitations?
  5. Who interprets the result?
  6. What happens to the data?
  7. What should the athlete do when the output conflicts with symptoms?

The last question matters most. Symptoms and clinical findings should not be overruled by a green screen.

No. Education, logging, communication, and adherence support can be useful. Evaluate the claim and evidence rather than the category label.
